Canada tops list of countries for inflammatory bowel disease

An Alberta researcher has determined that Canada and Europe have the most incidences of inflammatory bowel disease (IDB), which the report suggests is growing in prevalence. The global study on the painful disease, conducted by the University of Calgary’s Gilaad G. Kaplan, a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist, was published in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association. He says 0.5 per cent of Canadians suffer from some form of IBD..

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the two major illnesses that fall under the umbrella of IBD, occur most often in individuals between 20 and 40, which can result in a long-term cost to patients, health-care systems and society.

Did you know that physical inactivity is a risk factor in colorectal cancer development?

An inactive lifestyle has been linked to increased risk of colorectal cancer development. It is estimated that 22,200 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in Canada this year. Minor adjustments can play a major role in the modification of these statics. By getting your butt in gear and increasing your activity level, you will ultimately decrease your chance of contracting the disease.

Other identified risk factors include:

1. Poor diet – low in fruits, vegetables and fibre
2. Obesity
3. High red or processed meat consumption
4. Smoking
5. Excessive alcohol intake

Fast Facts on Colorectal Cancer

• It is the second leading cause of male and female cancer-related deaths in Canada.
• Colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. If screened and caught early – the chances of survival increase by 90%.
• Unfortunately as it stands today, nearly half of those diagnosed find out too late.
• Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer.
• 423 Canadians, on average, are diagnosed with colon cancer every week.
• 175 Canadians, on average, die of this disease every week.
• One in 14 men is expected to develop colorectal cancer during his lifetime and one in 27 will die of it.
• One in 15 women is expected to develop colorectal cancer during her lifetime and one in 31 will die of it.
• Anyone 50 and up should be screened regardless of family history.

Causes of Colorectal Cancer

There is no single cause of colorectal cancer, but some factors appear to increase the risk of developing it:

• age – particularly after 50

• having polyps (small growths on the inner wall of the colon and rectum)

• family history of colorectal cancer - especially if the relative (parent, sibling, child) developed colorectal cancer before the age of 45

• ­having familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC)

• inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)

• smoking

• ­physical inactivity

• obesity

Some people develop colorectal cancer without any of these risk factors. This is why general screening for colon cancer with a full colonoscopy is so important.
